The point spread is the amount of points the bookmakers use to keep the betting public betting on both sides of the line. If there were no point spreads then every bet would be made on the better team. In most sports events there is an obvious favorite. To keep an equal number of bets on both sides of the event the bookmakers give points to the underdog.
The spread is used by the public to choose a side to bet on. The underdog team get’s the points and the favorite team gives points.
